In our house, we probably go a bit over-the-top when it comes to Christmas decorations, but it is all about making memories.
The kids have reign of decorating the tree with their precious hand-made decorations. I know there are many people whose eyes would twitch at the thought of letting children decorate the Christmas tree (and believe me, it does not look like the perfect trees at the shopping centres) but it is something they love doing every year.We also put on a Christmas light display – complete with giant star on our roof. Do I age a little faster every time my husband climbs on the roof to adjust the lights, yet again? Absolutely. But once more, it is something that brings so much joy, not only for our family but for our neighbours and friends.
The other part of the house we love to decorate is the Christmas table. After all, it is where we spend a significant amount of time on Christmas Day, eating all of our yummy treats. And even if you are not keen about big decoration displays like we are, you can still bring some festivity to your Christmas table.
The dinnerware
I have a beautiful dinnerware set, with florals of soft pinks, greens and purples, given to me by my parents that I only use on ‘special occasions’. Now the boys are old enough, this dinnerware definitely comes out at Christmas, complete with crystal glassware. For the last couple of years, I have even been able to find Christmas crackers that coordinate perfectly. However, if you don’t have a ‘special occasion’ dinner set, or if your kids are little and you don’t want to use anything potentially breakable, why not use brightly-coloured picnic ware? Anything that brings some colour to the table will make it feel instantly festive.
The decorations
You can add a small Christmas tree, baubles, holly or other Christmas ornaments to your table to add the Christmas feel. However, make sure that whatever arrangement you add to the table is not too tall. Tall decorations will make it difficult for people on opposite sides of the table to talk, so if you do decide on a centre piece, keep it low.
The fun extras
The Christmas table isn’t just about the decorations and the food – it should include some fun as well! Include some simple card games, joke cards or even guessing games on the table. Games are great so to have something to do between courses and a fun way to break the ice if you have extended families or friends who might not know each other well.
Merry Christmas!
