Outdoor Bred Pork

A Natural Start to good Aussie Pork

At Linley Valley Pork, we believe good Aussie pork starts with a natural start in life.

Our Outdoor Bred story begins with our breeding sows, who are raised outdoors with access to open paddocks, fresh air, shelter and straw. When their piglets arrive, they can give birth outdoors and stay with their young through those important early weeks. Born into this natural environment, our piglets have space to move, explore and express their natural behaviours alongside their mother. It’s a natural start, surrounded by the fresh air and wide-open spaces of Western Australia. After weaning, they move to comfortable, spacious, naturally ventilated, straw-based shelters where they continue to grow in a safe and well-cared-for environment.

It’s all part of our approach to raising quality Australian pork, with care at every stage from farm to table.

A natural start to the good Aussie pork you love.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “outdoor bred” mean?

“Outdoor bred” means our pigs are born outside in paddocks and stay there with their mums until they are weaned. After weaning, they move indoors to straw-based sheds to finish growing. Our breeding sows are born and raised outdoors, with access to open paddocks, fresh air, shelter and straw.

Is outdoor bred the same as free range?

No. Free range pigs live outside for their entire life. Outdoor bred pigs are outside only for their early life (from birth to weaning), after weaning, they are raised indoors.

How long do the pigs stay outside?

Piglets stay in the paddock with their mum until they’re weaned, at around 4 weeks.

Why does the early life stage matter?

The first few weeks are the most formative for a piglet. Being born outside gives them:

  • Fresh air and space to move
  • The chance to root, explore and behave naturally
  • A low-stress start alongside their mum

This natural start supports stronger, healthier pigs – and that shows in the quality of the meat.

How can I tell if I’m buying outdoor bred pork?

Look for the “Outdoor Bred” claim on pack, often with a supporting statement like “Born outside, raised indoors on straw”. Our outdoor bred pigs APIQ certified (Australian Pork Industry Quality Assurance Program).
