Winter is here and the cold weather is back; so it is the perfect time to get in the kitchen and make some warm comforting meals that the entire family will love. Use pork as your meat or choice and you’ll find there are so many meals to choose from.
Try out some of these suggestions:
Mid-week meat and veg
This pork roast is an all-time family favourite, but when you don’t have much time to cook a roast with all the bells-and-whistles mid-week, why not cook up some pork chops and vegetables for an easy meat-and-veg dinner? Pork chops are so yummy with mashed potatoes, peas and gravy or even with hot chips.
The slow cooker
Put on the slow cooker with a good cut of pork and you’ll soon have melt-in-your-mouth, tender meat that you can do so much with. You can team it with some bread rolls and coleslaw for some easy but tasty sliders, add curry sauce and serve with rice or pappadums; or use it as a base for a pie. Slow cook a big piece of meat and keep then keep some of the slow cooked meat in the freezer – on busy days you simply defrost the meat and have it handy to use on so many winter comfort dishes.
The family roast
No winter meal plan would be complete without the family roast – but if you are getting stuck in a rut of the same dishes over and over again, remember the pork roast doesn’t have to be boring! Team with gravy or with apple sauce, swap the roast potatoes for sweet potato, pumpkin or even roasted cauliflower. Or skip the roast vegetables and serve with a creamy potato bake.
Pasta
There’s nothing like a good carb fix to make you feel warm and full! If your kids are big fans of bolognaise, you can mix it up a bit by using pork mince instead of beef.
Soup
Nothing warms a tummy like a hot bowl of soup, served with crusty bread – but don’t worry if you are sick of pumpkin soup! Pork is wonderful for soup or broth. Team slow-cooked, tender pork with broth and some winter vegetables, ad stock and seasoning and you’ll have a delicious broth in no time.
